Oman eyes Indian Travellers

As Oman looks toward the future with its ambitious Vision 2040, the Sultanate is making significant strides in redefining its tourism strategy, placing a special emphasis on sustainability and meaningful cultural experiences. At the heart of this mission is a renewed focus on Indian travellers, who represent one of the most valuable and growing visitor segments for the country.

India and Oman share deep-rooted historical, cultural, and trade connections, which make the Indian market a natural and strategic priority for Oman's tourism ambitions. In 2023 alone, approximately 600,000 Indian tourists visited Oman, accounting for 15% of the country’s total 4 million international arrivals. This impressive figure not only underscores India’s importance but also reflects the growing interest of Indian travellers in exploring new and authentic destinations.

With a goal of attracting 11.7 million visitors annually by 2040, Oman is keen to expand its offerings and infrastructure while maintaining its commitment to sustainability. This means a conscious move away from mass tourism in favour of experiences that respect the environment, support local communities, and celebrate Oman’s rich cultural heritage.

Highlighting the deep historical ties between Oman and India, Mohamed bin Mahmoud al Zadjali, adviser to the Minister of Heritage and Tourism for Engineering Affairs, noted that Indian tourists are a key visitor group.

“The collaboration between Oman and India is historically significant. We rely heavily on Indian tourists, who are among our primary visitor groups consistently exploring various locations in Oman." Zadjali said. “Collaboration with local communities has been central to our efforts since the 1970s, preserving castles, traditional markets, and cultural landscapes while fostering sustainable economic growth".

Oman is increasingly positioning itself as a prime destination for high-value segments such as corporate travel and destination weddings. The Sultanate has been promoting its capabilities in hosting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events, offering scenic backdrops, luxury hospitality, and authentic Arabian experiences. These efforts are designed to encourage loyalty among Indian travellers and position Oman as a preferred destination for both leisure and business purposes.

One of the country’s most ambitious sustainable tourism projects is the Oman Botanic Garden, which exemplifies the nation's commitment to preserving its unique biodiversity. The garden, set within a protected natural reserve, is the only one of its kind dedicated exclusively to the flora of Oman. It is home to more than 1,400 plant species, including over 100 that are found nowhere else in the world. This botanical marvel not only serves as a major tourist attraction but also as a vital centre for conservation and environmental education.

Oman’s broader tourism approach is deeply intertwined with cultural preservation. Since the 1970s, extensive efforts have been made to conserve historical forts, traditional souks, and heritage sites. Visitors are encouraged to engage with Omani culture—through food, music, and crafts—rather than merely observe it from afar.

As global travellers increasingly seek meaningful and responsible travel experiences, Oman’s strategy stands out. Its appeal lies in the balance it strikes between natural beauty, luxury, authenticity, and environmental responsibility. For Indian travellers—especially those seeking offbeat luxury, immersive culture, and sustainable choices—Oman offers an inviting mix of tradition and innovation.

By cultivating deeper connections with the Indian market and reinforcing its sustainable vision, Oman is not only enhancing its tourism potential but also laying the foundation for long-term, culturally rich, and environmentally conscious growth.
