Why Indian Travellers Are Looking East, Not West
It wasn’t until recently that Indian travellers, when planning an international vacation, instinctively looked west, to Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States and even Australia. But changing travel realities are rewriting this story.
Rising costs, visa hassles and long-haul fatigue are prompting Indians to look closer to home for their holidays, and Southeast Asia is emerging as the clear winner.
Destinations like Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam are making their mark on the travel map, actively enticing Indian tourists with easier visa processes, affordable airfares, value-for-money accommodation, immersive experiences and stunning landscapes. Among these emerging favourites is also Malaysia.
Malaysia has recorded nearly 1 million Indian tourist arrivals, reinforcing India’s importance as a source market.
One of the main attractions for Indian travellers is the ease of entry into Malaysia. Indians do not require a visa; instead, they only need to fill out a simple arrival card before entering the country. This straightforward policy has significantly increased the number of visitors from India to Malaysia.
While Kuala Lumpur is one of Malaysia’s most popular tourist destinations, attention is now shifting to a hidden gem located just north of it: Penang.
Malaysia’s rising star: Penang
Penang is located just 350 km north of Kuala Lumpur and offers a variety of attractions and experiences on its compact island. The heart and soul of Penang is George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its colonial buildings, vibrant street art, clan houses, and heritage shophouses, George Town is ideal for leisurely strolls and photo opportunities.
At Penang Hill, a funicular ride takes you up to panoramic views of the island. Next is Kek Lok Si Temple, one of Southeast Asia’s largest Buddhist temples, which is another must-visit, especially striking during festival periods. Beach lovers can head to Batu Feringghi, where soft sands meet laid-back cafés, water sports and sunset views.
In addition to its stunning landmarks and attractions, Penang’s culinary scene is one of its biggest draws. Often called the food capital of Malaysia, the island is famous for its legendary street food. From char kway teow and assam laksa to Indian-Muslim dishes, exploring food trails and hopping between hawker stalls are daily rituals for visitors.
Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali, Director, Tourism Malaysia, New Delhi, recommends kuey teow, a rice noodle dish. It’s usually fried, but it can be served in various preparations, such as vegetarian kuey teow, seafood kuey teow, or a wide variety of other dishes. You can enjoy it in a soup called kuey teow soup or fried as fried kuey teow. It can be made vegetarian or non-vegetarian, so both options are available.
One of Penang’s key advantages is its seamless integration into larger travel itineraries. Visitors can plan multi-destination trips connecting Penang with Singapore or Bangkok, thanks to the island's prime location and enhanced air connectivity.
Penang’s increasing popularity in India is also due to improved air links. Last year, IndiGo began daily direct flights from Chennai to Penang, and the response has been remarkable, with over 80 per cent of seats regularly filled.
Visitor arrivals from India have primarily come from the southern states; however, Penang is now attracting interest from across the entire country. Currently, Penang is accessible from over 30 cities in India, with 14 Indian cities connected to three Malaysian cities. Tourism authorities are in discussions with Indian airlines to establish additional direct routes, suggesting the upward trend is expected to continue.
As Indian travellers increasingly seek closer, more convenient holiday options rather than long-haul trips, Penang is well-positioned to benefit. With excellent flight connectivity, visa-free travel, a familiar yet diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and a wide array of unique and enjoyable experiences, the destination meets all the criteria for an ideal vacation.
