Ayurveda in the Age of Instagram

Ayurveda is no longer niche, it’s a substantial global industry. No longer confined to traditional clinics or esoteric textbooks, Ayurveda has entered the modern wellness space with renewed vigour, attracting a generation that is both health-conscious and spiritually curious. As per a recent report, the global wellness tourism market reached $  830 billion in 2023 and is projected to rise further as wellness seekers seek authentic experiences. Specifically, the wellness retreat market was valued at $ 225.9 billion in 2024, forecasted to jump to $  249.6 billion in 2025—a 10.5 per cent YoY increase. Retreats rooted in Ayurveda and spa services are a significant pillar of this growth.

Focussing on Ayurveda itself, the Ayurveda-centric spa market stood at $ 4.86 billion in 2024, and is expected to grow at 9.2 per cent CAGR through 2035, reaching $12.8 billion. Meanwhile, the broader Ayurvedic products market—from herbal supplements and skin care to immunity boosters—is valued at $  8.45 billion in 2023, rising to $  9.44 billion in 2024, with forecasts predicting $  22.7 billion by 2032 (CAGR ~11.7 per cent)

Aesthetic Meets Authenticity

In an age where everything is filter-worthy, these retreats are elegantly balancing substance with style. Think sustainable architecture, tranquil herbal gardens, hand-pounded oils, and treatments performed in rooms that blend natural materials with minimalist luxury. Instagram might draw the crowd, but it's the authentic healing experience that keeps them rooted.

Instagram-friendly resort designs reflect a new standard in luxury wellness. In 2024, 33.3 per cent of wellness retreat accommodations focussed on upscale resorts . Yet beneath the veneer lie substance-driven protocols: Vaidya-led dosha diagnostics, bespoke oil therapies, and plant-based medicinal meals, evidence of Ayurveda’s preventive health ethos. These retreats collectively represent a growing slice of the multi-hundred-billion-dollar wellness pie.

Next-Gen Wellness Seekers
The digital-savvy generation has propelled this shift. No longer content with crash diets or synthetic pills, wellness seekers are returning to roots, and Ayurveda offers an ancient compass for today’s overstimulated minds and exhausted bodies. These retreats become sanctuaries where the nervous system slows, digestion improves, and sleep deepens.

Gen Z and millennials are the power drivers here: over 60 per cent of younger global travellers now seek experiences offering mind–body nourishment. Affluent travellers, too, align travel choices with wellness—80 per cent say wellness amenities like spas, fitness, and nature immersion influence their decisions.

Retreat participants are predominantly solo travellers (40.2 per cent) in 2024. In the same year, the overall wellness travel spend by U.S. travellers hit $  258 billion —a reflection of the broader crystal-clear thirst for holistic journeys.

Rituals Reimagined

  • Ayurvedic oil massages (Abhyanga), Shirodhara, steam baths, and yoga still anchor the schedule.
  • Added to these are guided journaling, mindfulness, cooking workshops, and essential oil blending sessions, elements increasingly standard across retreats.

Kerala’s Crown Jewel: Kalari Kovilakom

Kalari Kovilakom
Often called the "Palace for Ayurveda", Kalari Kovilakom draws guests for multi-week stays under clinical and royal scrutiny, with transformations often including weight loss, clearer skin, enhanced digestion, and improved sleep.

Global Growth Beyond India
Ultimately, Ayurveda is more than an experience; it is a lifestyle. These retreats sow the seeds for long-term change. Guests leave not only with glowing skin and restored vitality, but also with a deeper understanding of how to live in tune with nature, cycles, and self.

Ayurvedic care is thriving in global luxury hubs. The US Ayurvedic products market grew sharply in 2024, comprising 32 per cent of global share, with Europe trailing at 28 per cent, and APAC growing fastest at ~30 per cent. Meanwhile, domestic tourism to Kerala surged: UK bookings to India rose 29 per cent in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Why It Matters?
As per Global Wellness Institute, The global wellness economy hit $  6.3 trillion in 2023—about 6 per cent of global GDP—and is projected to reach $  6.8 trillion in 2024, scaling up to $  9 trillion by 2028. Ayurveda plays a meaningful role within this ecosystem as both traditional & complementary medicine (~$  553 billion in 2023) and across wellness tourism—a sector rebounding robustly post-pandemic.

In Summary, as per Global Growth Insights
