Sun Siyam Iru Fushi has recently celebrated its annual Eco Week — a lively initiative dedicated to environmental awareness and sustainability. Guests and team members united to mark World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day, and World Ocean Day through a series of immersive and inspiring activities.
The week commenced with a guided snorkelling conservation tour and reef clean-up led by our resident Marine Biologist, offering guests a chance to explore our colourful house reef while helping to safeguard it. On World Environment Day, guests participated in a meaningful tree-planting session and enjoyed a nature walk through the island’s lush tropical scenery.
World Ocean Day featured hands-on coral planting at Waters Edge Beach, encouraging guests to join our ongoing reef restoration efforts. Later that evening, guests gathered beneath the stars for an open-air screening of an engaging documentary about coral reefs, deepening their understanding of marine ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation. The day concluded with a magical night snorkelling adventure, revealing the reef’s hidden beauty after dark.
Eco Week exemplifies Iru Fushi’s commitment to sustainability through its Sun Siyam Cares programme, offering memorable experiences that inspire guests to connect with nature and contribute to protecting our planet.
As part of our ongoing sustainability initiatives, the resort has introduced coral restoration projects, regular reef clean-ups, island-wide tree planting, and educational activities. This year, we’ve planted 126 trees and installed 18 coral frames in the lagoon. We’ve also reduced single-use plastic by switching to glass water bottles and establishing an in-house bottling plant. Our community engagement includes supporting local schools and hosting environmental awareness sessions, reflecting our dedication to both nature and local communities.
Sun Siyam Resorts remains committed to responsible and sustainable operations across the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The Sun Siyam Cares programme focuses on reducing energy and water consumption, cutting plastic waste, supporting local communities, and promoting renewable energy. We champion conservation efforts and aim to preserve local heritage, reducing our environmental impact while fostering socio-economic development.
