In a world where many luxury hotels can feel interchangeable, Kempinski stands apart as a collection of remarkable properties, each deeply rooted in its destination. With more than a century of European heritage, Kempinski evokes a sense of place, elegance, and emotion; all of which resonate deeply with discerning travellers across the world.

We caught up with Sebastian Riewe, Vice President – Global Sales, Kempinski Hotels, to explore what makes this legendary hospitality brand such a unique experience, and why its carefully curated moments continue to enchant global guests including a growing number of Indian travellers.

Journey into Hospitality

Sebastian’s journey into luxury hospitality began with a deep admiration for authenticity. “What brought me to Kempinski,” he reflects, “were these very special hotels where you immediately know where you are. Never interchangeable, and always unique.” That distinct character is what defines Kempinski from grand palace hotels in Europe to contemporary coastal resorts in Asia and Africa.

Each Kempinski hotel is designed to reflect the soul of its surroundings whether it’s the Ottoman grandeur of Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, the timeless elegance of Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, the alpine serenity of Kempinski Palace Engelberg, or the Balinese warmth of The Apurva Kempinski Bali.

Crafted Luxury, Defined by Emotion

Ask Sebastian what truly sets Kempinski apart, and the answer is simple yet profound: “It’s our heartfelt service. It feels different — because it is.” Each hotel in the Kempinski portfolio is built around an emotional connection, a sense of being seen, remembered, and personally cared for. From the design to the service philosophy, every detail is carefully crafted to reflect what modern travellers seek: meaningful luxury.

In Sebastian’s words, “Luxury means different things to different people — sometimes it’s about not having to think, or worry. For others, it’s about being surprised. Crafted luxury, to me, means designing an experience that feels like it was made just for you.”

Connecting Guests to Culture, Cuisine, and Community

Today’s traveller isn’t just checking in, they’re searching for stories. Kempinski understands this deeply. Whether it’s a walk through Istanbul’s ancient markets, a theatre evening in Berlin, or a guided wilderness hike in Africa, each hotel team from the Concierge to the iconic Ladies in Red, acts as a cultural insider, curating experiences that bring the destination alive.

Cuisine, of course, plays a central role in this. With a legacy rooted in European gastronomy, Kempinski’s restaurants are known for celebrating regional ingredients and culinary heritage. In Bali, for instance, guests dine in Koral, the island’s first aquarium restaurant, where a diver delivers an unforgettable underwater proposal of magic that stays long after the bubbles disappear.

A Growing Connection With Indian Travellers

Kempinski’s relationship with Indian travellers continues to grow, and Sebastian notes the brand’s growing adaptability. “We are very happy about every Indian guest in our hotels. I see a very healthy mix of Indian travellers across all segments — families, honeymooners, wedding groups — and we’re constantly learning to cater to them better.”

While there are no immediate plans for rapid expansion in India, Kempinski takes a thoughtful approach to growth. “For us,” Sebastian shares, “it’s always about the right product. We don’t grow just for the sake of it.”

 A Tale of Two Destinations

When asked to name the perfect Kempinski getaway for romance, Sebastian doesn’t hesitate: Kempinski Palace Engelberg. Located in the Swiss Alps, this serene alpine retreat features breathtaking views of Mount Titlis, an 800-year-old Benedictine Monastery nearby, and an entire wellness floor designed for deep relaxation. “It’s quiet, beautiful, and timeless — everything you’d want for a romantic escape.”

For families, it’s The Apurva Kempinski Bali that takes centre stage. With beachfront access, expansive kid-friendly programming, and rich cultural immersion, the property offers a seamless blend of relaxation and activity for all ages.

25,000 Moments And Counting

After more than a decade with Kempinski, over 70 hotel stays, and countless guest interactions, Sebastian says it’s hard to pick just one favourite moment. “There have been 25,000 special memories, but it’s always the people who made them special. That’s the real magic of hospitality — and of Kempinski.”
