The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are seeking UNESCO World Heritage designation for four of their notable sites, including India’s only active volcano, in a bid to promote geo-heritage tourism and enhance international recognition.

Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar announced that the administration is collaborating with the Geological Survey of India to include these unique landmarks on the Tentative List. The initiative aims to preserve the region’s distinctive geological and ecological assets while transforming them into tourism hotspots.

One of the proposed sites is Barren Island, renowned for its active volcano, which attracts both scientists and adventure-seekers. Another key site is Narcondam Island, home to the rare and endemic Narcondam Hornbill, making it a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

The proposal also highlights the mud volcanoes of Baratang, a geological marvel with eco-tourism potential comparable to South Korea’s Jeju Island, and Shaheed Dweep’s striking natural rock bridge, a formation that already draws thousands of visitors annually.

Kumar expressed a broader vision of sustainable tourism development, stating, “We are working to promote our heritage sites, which reflect our history, biodiversity, and way of life, in a more organised and internationally recognised manner.”

To support this initiative, the government is partnering with the GSI to ensure thorough scientific documentation, infrastructure improvement, and responsible tourism planning, with the dual aim of boosting the local economy and strengthening conservation efforts.
