In a landmark development for adventure sports and tourism, a significant agreement has been signed involving the World Rafting Federation (WRF), the Indian Rafting Foundation (TIRF), the Asian Council for WRF, and the Arunachal Pradesh Water Sports Association (APWSA).
Under the terms of this agreement, any rafting event held in Arunachal or elsewhere in India will now fall under the purview of the Asian Council and the WRF. This move ensures adherence to international standards, global recognition, and enhanced support for the sport across the region.
In a major boost for the state’s sporting infrastructure, the APWSA has been formally recognised as the official authority for canoeing and rafting in Arunachal under the International Canoe Federation. This status paves the way for structured development, training programmes, and international collaborations within the sector.
Speaking to the media, APWSA president Nino Dai expressed his enthusiasm about the agreement. “This tie-up will be immensely beneficial for Arunachal and the entire country. With support from WRF, we will now be able to organise workshops, conduct river guide profiling, and provide professional training to local talents more efficiently. Most importantly, this will boost social and ecotourism, creating opportunities for employment and sustainable development,” he added.
This initiative is widely regarded as a turning point in promoting adventure sports in the North-East, with Arunachal poised to become a renowned destination for rafting and kayaking on the global stage.
As ecotourism and sustainable adventure activities gain momentum worldwide, this agreement represents more than just a sporting milestone — it is a strategic move towards socioeconomic and cultural growth in one of India’s most pristine and promising regions.
In a related development, the Indian Rafting Foundation (IRF), in collaboration with the APWSA, is planning to organise a continental rafting championship in Arunachal in April 2026. “Discussions are ongoing with the WRF, and the proposal, if realised, would mark a historic milestone for the state and the country in the world of water sports,” Dai informed.
Representatives from the Indian delegation included APWSA president Nino Dai, Sports Authority of Arunachal (SAA) Director Gumnya Karbak, and APWSA’s secretary of hospitality, Semi Doni.
