Despite ongoing global tensions and economic uncertainties, the Asia Pacific region continues to demonstrate resilience and appeal as a leading travel destination.

Updated Outlook for 2025–2027

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has published an updated Mid-Year Forecast, part of its flagship Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts 2025–2027, revealing hopeful projections for the region’s tourism recovery. Based on detailed data analysis, the update outlines expected visitor numbers across 39 destinations under three different scenarios, offering vital insights for tourism professionals navigating today’s unpredictable landscape.

Resilience Amid Challenges

Amid challenges such as geopolitical conflicts, currency fluctuations, and changing local attitudes towards mass tourism, the report emphasises the importance of agility and strategic planning. PATA’s Chief Executive, Noor Ahmad Hamid, highlights:

“This mid-year update goes beyond forecasting – it’s a strategic guidance for tourism leaders across the region. As the industry grapples with unpredictable forces from geopolitics to global inflation, staying informed through timely, evidence-based insights is more important than ever. With the past six months having brought a wave of developments that directly impacted our industry, this report empowers destinations and stakeholders to anticipate market shifts, prepare for disruption, and uncover emerging opportunities – from wellness travel and digital influence to the shifting geography of source markets.”

Projected Growth and Key Destinations

By 2027, under a moderate scenario, international visitors to Asia Pacific are projected to reach approximately 801 million, up from 692 million in 2025. China remains the leading inbound destination, expected to welcome up to 148 million travellers by 2027, with the United States and Turkey close behind. Notably, Turkey and Mongolia are experiencing especially strong recovery, surpassing pre-pandemic figures.

Diversification of Source Markets

Source markets are diversifying, with China still leading outbound travel, while the US, South Korea, and Japan maintain steady growth. Countries such as India, the UK, and Russia are gaining increasing importance, reflecting a broadening in regional travel demand.

Reshaping Travel Patterns, Trends and Opportunities

Policy shifts, changing currency exchange rates, and new travel corridors are reshaping outbound patterns and opening fresh opportunities within the region.

Interest in wellness tourism is rising, driven by ageing populations in key markets, presenting destinations with opportunities to develop health-focused and inclusive offerings. Additionally, social media’s influence, particularly through user-generated content, is rapidly shaping younger travellers’ preferences, with demand for authentic, shareable experiences increasing.
