Samburu at night

In a world where city lights outshine the stars, Kenya is bringing the night sky back into focus. Sopa Lodges, in collaboration with Leo Sky Africa, has unveiled a ground-breaking travel experience that invites visitors to look upwards, towards the stars, and into the heart of cultural preservation.

The newly launched Astro Tourism initiative in Samburu, Kenya, introduces travellers to the beauty of unpolluted dark skies while celebrating indigenous celestial traditions. This isn’t just about stargazing—it’s about storytelling, science, and sustainability, all woven into an unforgettable night under the African sky.

“It is a proud moment for us at Sopa Lodges to introduce our latest innovation - Astro Tourism,” said Kennedy Ayoti, Chief Operating Officer, Sopa Lodges East Africa. “This innovative experience is a game changer in the region, combining Samburu’s naturally dark skies with rich community narratives and cultural beliefs surrounding celestial events. We have invested time in research and staff training to ensure the experience is not only authentic but also expertly delivered to our guests. Samburu is already renowned for the iconic 'Samburu special five - the reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, gerenuk, grevy’s zebra, and the Somali ostrich. With the introduction of Astro Tourism, Sopa Lodges now proudly offers a ‘special six’ - adding the stars to our unique wildlife and cultural encounters.”

Set amidst Samburu’s vast, remote landscape, the experience blends astronomy with authentic local narratives passed down through generations. Guests are guided through the constellations while learning about their cultural significance to the Samburu people, creating a truly immersive and educational encounter.

More than just a new tourism product, the initiative empowers local communities by creating opportunities in cultural exchange, astro-guiding and sustainable tourism enterprise. It diversifies Kenya’s appeal beyond wildlife safaris, opening up new ways for travellers to connect with nature and community in equal measure.

As Astro Tourism lights up the path for conscious travellers, it also strengthens Africa’s position on the global stage of responsible and experience-driven tourism.

“We are proud to partner with Sopa Lodges on this exciting journey into Astro Tourism,” said Kimani Wa Nyoike, expert astronomer and Founding Director of Leo Sky Africa. “Our role is to guide and support the trained astronomers in delivering immersive, insightful stargazing experiences that highlight the beauty and the uniqueness of Samburu. This region offers some of the most pristine night skies in the world. Thanks to its location along the equator, it provides a rare opportunity to observe both the northern and southern hemispheres. It is truly an exceptional setting for connecting people with the universe.” He added.
