India’s Digital Travel Platform Expands Language Support and Cross-Border Capabilities

Digi Yatra, India’s self-sovereign identity and privacy-by-design platform, has expanded to 19 million downloads, with 30 per cent adoption across 24 airports and more than 77 million journeys. The platform is preparing for global interoperability in 2026 and is targeting eighty per cent adoption by 2028.

The platform has launched a beta of six regional languages in partnership with Bhashini, with plans to extend to all twenty-two Indian languages. The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s efforts to increase accessibility and improve digital travel adoption across Indian airports.

Digi Yatra is piloting electronic passport–based enrolment for international travel after registering its first global user. This will support expats, non-resident Indians and foreign travellers who will use digital identity verification instead of manual document checks. The initiative is being developed in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Bureau of Immigration, ICAO, and IATA under the OneID programme, with international pilot trials planned for the next financial year.

Digi Yatra is expanding its ecosystem to support convenience-led travel services. The platform now enables direct boarding pass sharing from major airlines and travel apps, including IndiGo, Air India, and MakeMyTrip, aiming to reduce delays and operational challenges at airports.

Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation, said, “The momentum we are witnessing today marks a new chapter in India’s digital travel story. Our multilingual rollout and international pilot programme reflect our commitment to making travel simpler, more inclusive, and globally interoperable. What excites us most is the interest we are receiving from countries and global aviation bodies that see Digi Yatra as a model for seamless travel. With strong support from ministries and partner agencies, we are confident that the coming years will bring faster progress than expected, taking India closer to a world where identity verification is instant, secure, and entirely passenger-driven.”

The organisation is considering expanding its digital identity services beyond airports, subject to approvals, to enable secure hotel check-ins and automated access through encrypted credentials and biometric verification. Facial authentication could replace manual identification processes, streamlining guest movement and reducing wait times.

The platform is also exploring applications in museums, monuments and tourist sites to simplify ticket management and visitor flow, particularly in high-footfall locations and areas with limited connectivity. Extending the model internationally may benefit Indian travellers abroad and help increase India’s tourism engagement.

All services are built on Digi Yatra’s decentralised, privacy-by-design architecture, intended to support compliance with global digital identity standards.
