In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched its annual Vana Mahotsav celebration with a large-scale tree planting initiative. This drive reaffirms the civic body’s commitment to making the city greener and more climate-resilient, reinforcing Hyderabad’s reputation as a ‘Green City’.
Inaugurated by the GHMC Mayor and Commissioner, the campaign focusses on climate action, pollution reduction, and urban sustainability, with active participation from communities across all zones to meet ambitious green infrastructure targets for the future.
The GHMC Mayor highlighted that Vana Mahotsav is more than a symbolic gesture; it plays a crucial role in addressing climate change, improving air quality, and enhancing residents’ quality of life. She expressed plans to considerably expand tree planting efforts throughout all urban areas, aligning with Hyderabad’s broader green infrastructure ambitions and fostering a healthier environment.
The GHMC Commissioner stressed the importance of prioritising native and beneficial plant species, chosen for their ability to provide shade, purify the air, and support local biodiversity — all vital for ecological balance.
He also affirmed a strong commitment to surpass previous planting targets this year, with a focus on encouraging active community involvement to ensure the campaign's success. The initiative aims to plant hundreds of thousands of saplings in public spaces such as residential neighbourhoods, parks, and along major roads, transforming the city’s landscape.
Residents, residents’ associations, schools, and other organisations have been called upon to participate in this vital mission to green Hyderabad actively. Senior officials also took part in the inaugural event, demonstrating collective resolve.
This sizeable green initiative exemplifies Hyderabad’s dedication to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. By expanding urban greenery and fostering public engagement, the city aims to build a resilient ecosystem that benefits future generations, enhances urban beauty, and cements its status as an eco-friendly metropolis.
