India has achieved another engineering milestone with the construction of the world’s highest motorable road at 19,400 ft in eastern Ladakh. Built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the new route crosses the Mig La Pass and connects the Hanle region with Fukche village near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The road, part of the Likaru–Mig La–Fukche alignment, surpasses BRO’s previous record at Umling La (19,024 ft). At this altitude, the Mig La Pass stands higher than both Mount Everest’s South Base Camp in Nepal (17,598 ft) and the North Base Camp in Tibet (16,900 ft).

Led by Brigadier Vishal Srivastava under Project Himank, the BRO team battled extreme cold, thin air, and unpredictable weather to complete the project. Engineers faced freezing temperatures, oxygen levels at nearly half those at sea level, and treacherous mountain terrain to finish the route.

To mark the achievement, the Indian national flag and the BRO flag were hoisted at Mig La Pass. The Indian Army praised the effort on X, noting its importance for border connectivity and community resilience.

The new road will make a tangible difference to residents of Hanle and Fukche, providing year-round access, faster travel, and a reliable link for essential supplies, even during Ladakh’s harsh winters.
