In a major boost for travellers heading from Maharashtra to Goa, Konkan Railway is set to launch India’s first-ever car ferry train service just in time for Ganesh Chaturthi. This new route between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa will allow private car owners to load their vehicles onto specially designed train wagons, while they travel comfortably in air-conditioned passenger coaches.
Designed to cut the typical 20–22 hour road journey to a manageable 12-hour rail ride, this service is a game-changer for anyone looking to avoid long drives and congested highways during the festive season. Trains will depart Kolad at 5 PM and reach Verna by 5 AM. Passengers will need to report at Kolad station by 2 PM for vehicle loading and boarding.
Each train will carry up to 40 cars on 20 custom-built wagons, with each vehicle securely fastened during the journey. However, a minimum of 16 vehicles must be booked for the service to run. The freight charge per vehicle is Rs 7,875 one way.
Up to three passengers per car booking can travel: two in a 3AC coach at Rs 935 each, and one in the second-class SLR coach for Rs 190. Passengers are not allowed to remain inside their cars during transit.
Aimed particularly at easing the festival rush, the service offers a practical, comfortable alternative to road travel bringing together convenience, safety, and innovation. If well received, it could set the template for similar services across the country.
