IndiGo has confirmed that, even after its lease of two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft from Turkish Airlines ends on 31 August 2025, it will continue operating its Delhi and Mumbai–Istanbul routes. The DGCA’s final three-month lease extension, granted amid diplomatic tensions, ensures the airline can maintain service until then.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers emphasised the airline’s commitment to the Istanbul market, stating: “We will continue to operate to Istanbul.” Among the solutions being explored is deploying IndiGo’s own Airbus A321 aircraft for medium-haul service on the route. Though smaller than the 777s, these jets can effectively cover the route until long-term solutions are in place.

Importantly, the codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines will remain unaffected. Elbers confirmed, “There’s no reason why we shouldn't,” underlining the strategic value of the partnership This arrangement allows passengers to enjoy seamless connectivity and combined networks via a single ticket.

The lease termination follows heightened scrutiny over ties with Turkey, triggered by Turkey’s support for Pakistan amid regional tensions. Even Air India protested, citing business and security implications. Nevertheless, the DGCA approved the extension to minimise travel disruption.

IndiGo also faces ongoing supply chain challenges affecting aircraft and spare part availability. Elbers noted the airline has managed these issues well by extending leases and adjusting schedules, maintaining its vast fleet of over 400 aircraft and 2,200 daily flights.

As IndiGo prepares to phase out the leased 777s, it intends to find sustainable alternatives like existing A321s or future A350 or A321XLR aircraft. With Turkey still a key long-haul partner, the airline’s strategy ensures connectivity and growth remain on track.
