In a major step towards redefining Indian aviation, IndiGo has announced the commencement of commercial operations from the highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). In partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL)—India’s largest operator of public-private partnership (PPP) airports—this move marks a critical milestone in the expansion of India’s aviation infrastructure.
From day one, IndiGo will operate 18 daily departures (36 Air Traffic Movements) from NMIA to more than 15 cities, making it the first airline to confirm full-scale operations from the airport. This number will scale up significantly to 79 daily departures (158 ATMs) by November 2025, including 14 international flights, and further expand to over 100 daily departures by March 2026. By November 2026, IndiGo plans to operate 140 daily departures, with 30 international flights connecting India to key global hubs.
Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo said: “IndiGo will be the inaugural airline to operate from NMIA and we couldn’t be more pleased to announce this. Our alliance signals towards achievement of complete operational readiness on both sides to take next steps. This expansion underscores our dedication to catering to the evolving needs of our aspirational travellers and further contributing to the growth of India's booming aviation sector. The new flights from the brand-new NMIA will elevate the travel experience of our customers while enjoying affordable, on-time hassle-free services on our unparalleled network."
Once fully operational, NMIA will be capable of handling 90 million passengers and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, positioning it as India’s premier international aviation hub. With state-of-the-art infrastructure and a strategic location, the airport is expected to play a vital role in India’s journey to becoming the third-largest aviation economy by 2030.
Commenting on the partnership, Arun Bansal, CEO, AAHL said, “We are delighted to announce IndiGo as the first airline partner to commence operations from NMIA. This partnership marks a major step towards confirming NMIA’s position as a transfer hub for domestic and international travellers. Together, we are poised to transform travel experience for millions of passengers, providing them both convenience and enhanced travel options. Our collaboration is set to strengthen NMIA’s role as an aviation gateway for the region and for travellers nationally and internationally.”
IndiGo’s commitment goes beyond connectivity. The airline is investing in a seamless travel experience, offering both domestic and international connectivity while ensuring ease of access for the wider Indian population. Its phased growth strategy at NMIA reflects its goal to be the airline of choice for every Indian traveller.
The dual-airport system created by the launch of NMIA alongside the existing Mumbai International Airport will significantly decongest air traffic, improve the passenger experience, and generate substantial economic benefits for Mumbai and the wider Maharashtra region.
This strategic alliance between IndiGo and AAHL reinforces NMIA’s role as a key driver of India’s aviation growth, fostering innovation, global connectivity, and regional development.
