Japan has recorded its highest ever monthly tourist arrivals, with nearly 3.91 million international visitors arriving in April 2025. This milestone has been driven by the country’s globally admired cherry blossom season and a weaker yen, which has made travel to Japan more affordable for overseas visitors.

The figures, released by the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), reveal a marked rise in arrivals from key markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore, China, South Korea, and Taiwan. Visitors flocked to popular destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, with cherry blossom viewing and cultural experiences high on the agenda.

The favourable exchange rate has played a major role in attracting tourists, especially as Japan becomes increasingly cost-effective in comparison to other global destinations. According to official data, spending by international travellers reached ¥2.27 trillion (approximately £11.5 billion) in the first quarter of 2025—up 28.4 per cent from the previous year. This boost in tourism revenue has positioned the sector as Japan’s second-largest export industry, just behind automotive manufacturing.

With travel demand showing no signs of slowing, Japan appears on track to exceed its previous annual visitor record of 36.9 million, set in 2024. Analysts suggest that continued growth in flight capacity, improved visa processes, and the appeal of Japan’s seasonal experiences could help sustain this upward trend.

While the surge in visitor numbers presents economic opportunities, it also raises concerns about overcrowding and sustainability. As local authorities begin to explore ways to manage tourism flow more effectively, the conversation around responsible travel and community impact is gaining importance.

Overall, Japan’s recent tourism boom highlights the country’s enduring global appeal and the economic ripple effect of a well-timed blend of natural beauty and favourable market conditions.
