Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has emphasised that rural tourism stands as a robust pathway to self-reliance and pride. Focusing on local employment, economic development, and showcasing Indian cultural riches — from festivals to cuisine — he highlighted the emerging network of homestays across Madhya Pradesh, embodying the traditional ethos of "Atithi Devo Bhava". The collaborative efforts of homestay operators and the state government aim to leave every visitor with lasting, positive impressions.
Addressing the state-level event ‘Grameen Rang - Paryatan Sang’, Dr Yadav underlined India’s longstanding spiritual tradition, where pilgrims embark on journeys such as the Char Dham Yatra, representing Sanatan cultural values and regional diversity. Despite global disruptions, India continues its progressive ascent, he affirmed, lighting the traditional lamp at the event held at Kushabhau Thakre Auditorium.
He unveiled a microsite for the Responsible Tourism Mission to promote rural tourism and facilitate online homestay reservations, granting tourists a virtual window into rural life. Additionally, he virtually inaugurated 241 new homestays sprouting across various villages.
Agreements and Initiatives to Boost Rural Tourism
Four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in the presence of the Chief Minister to enhance rural tourism and local livelihoods. These included collaborations between Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) and Divya Yog Mandir Trust (Patanjali) to promote rural development and empower marginalised communities; an agreement with Signify Innovations India Ltd. to install energy-efficient street lighting in 61 villages; a pact with Scope Global Skills University for skill development and film tourism; and a treaty between MPTB and Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) to empower homestays on digital platforms and connect them with online travel agencies.
Promotion of Wellness and Rural Infrastructure
Dr Yadav announced the imminent launch of helicopter services in Madhya Pradesh, modelled on Uttarakhand, to bolster wildlife, religious, healthcare, and medical tourism. The state aims to be a leader in global tourism.
He also participated in the wellness summit organised to promote holistic tourism. During the event, he interacted with homestay operators and honoured district collectors of ten districts for achieving their homestay construction targets. Homestays are now active in 37 districts, with the government aiming to establish 1,000 across the state.
Recognition for Excellence in Rural Tourism
The Chief Minister recognised achievements by various stakeholders including district archaeology and culture councils, MPSTDC regional managers, project support organisations, and village sarpanchs. Notably, awards were conferred to the six best homestays, including categories for rural, urban, farmstay, and bed & breakfast establishments.
Six entrepreneurs received recognition for establishing their first homestays in their villages, fostering rural enterprise. Support organisations, such as Hunnarshala Foundation, and initiatives under the Clean Destination Project, supported by Coca-Cola India Foundation and Sahas, also received honours for their contributions.
Impressive Growth and Future Goals
Dr Yadav shared that tourist footfall in Madhya Pradesh surged by an extraordinary 52 per cent in 2024 compared to 2020, with key destinations like Orchha, Khajuraho, Kanha, Pench, and Bandhavgarh experiencing substantial growth, reinforcing Madhya Pradesh’s position as a wildlife and cultural tourism hub. The launch of 241 homestays at prime locations aims to offer tourists authentic rural experiences.
With a target of developing 1,000 homestays, the state continues to foster self-reliance and tourism-led growth, steered by Dr Yadav's leadership, in a bid to position Madhya Pradesh as India's premier tourist destination.
