Streaming giant Netflix has partnered with the Ministry of Tourism, India (MoT) to reimagine how audiences discover the country through stories on screen. The collaboration aims to integrate India’s diverse destinations into Netflix India’s original productions, blending creative storytelling with tourism promotion.
Speaking on the partnership, V Vidyavathi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, said: “This collaboration with Netflix reflects our shared commitment to showcasing India’s cultural richness and diversity. ”
Monika Shergill, Vice President, Content, Netflix India, shared, “At Netflix, we’ve always believed that India’s stories are as vast and varied as its landscapes — rich with heart, history, and a unique cultural rhythm. Through this partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, we’re not just reaffirming our commitment; we’re celebrating the very soul of India, its diversity, its people, and its voices. Together, we hope to create more opportunities for local talent and communities to thrive, and to share the magic of India with the world.”
From the lush Nilgiri forests seen in The Elephant Whisperers to the mysterious shores of the Andaman Islands in Kaala Paani, Netflix titles have already placed Indian landscapes in the global spotlight. Recent productions have also captured Punjab’s vibrant fields in Amar Singh Chamkila, the bustling streets of Rajasthan in Mismatched, and the misty hills of Kalimpong in Jaane Jaan. Each setting provides not just a backdrop, but an invitation for audiences to explore these locations in real life.
The partnership draws on a growing global trend where screen tourism influences travel decisions. International examples such as Emily in Paris and When Life Gives You Tangerines have demonstrated how stories can drive cultural curiosity and inspire visitors to experience destinations first-hand.
Over the past decade, Netflix has built one of the most extensive filming footprints in India, spanning more than 100 cities across 23 states. This wide reach has created opportunities for local communities while also presenting India’s heritage, culture, and landscapes to a worldwide audience.
This is Netflix’s first collaboration with a tourism authority in South Asia, building on similar initiatives with government agencies in countries including France, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, and Greece. By joining forces with the Ministry of Tourism, the platform hopes to deepen its role in highlighting the richness of Incredible India.
For travellers, the impact is clear: seeing India’s cultures and landscapes reflected on screen often sparks the desire to visit. With stories that resonate both locally and globally, this partnership is set to make India’s destinations even more appealing to audiences and adventurers around the world.
