Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal on September 20, marking a significant boost to India’s maritime sector. The new terminal, located at Indira Dock, is designed to host some of the world’s largest cruise liners and is seen as a step towards positioning Mumbai as a global cruise hub.
Alongside the launch, Modi also laid the foundation for several major port projects, including a new container terminal at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, a container berth and cargo facilities at Paradip Port, and the Tuna Tekra Multi-Cargo Terminal in Gujarat. Other initiatives include firefighting and road infrastructure at Kamarajar Port in Ennore, coastal protection works at Chennai Port, and ship repair facilities in Patna and Varanasi.
The Prime Minister will later travel to Gujarat for the Samudra se Samriddhi event in Bhavnagar, where he will inaugurate and launch development projects valued at more than Rs 34,200 crore (£3.2bn). These span energy, infrastructure, and renewable power, including the HPLNG Regasification Terminal at Chhara Port, new refinery projects, a 600 MW green energy initiative, and the complete solarisation of Dhordo village in Kutch.
PM Modi will also undertake an aerial survey of the Dholera Special Investment Region, envisaged as a greenfield smart industrial city, and review the ongoing development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, being built at a cost of around Rs 4,500 crore (£430m).
The projects are aimed at modernising India’s ports, strengthening coastal infrastructure, and pushing forward the country’s clean energy transition.
