Fremantle is preparing to welcome back Princess Cruises, with the Grand Princess set to be based at the port from April 2027. The move marks the cruise line’s first homeporting in Western Australia in seven years and is expected to breathe new life into the region’s tourism industry.
The ship will launch its season with two itineraries — a 15-night journey to Brisbane followed by a 17-night voyage to Sydney in May. While further details are still to be revealed, the announcement signals Princess Cruises’ renewed commitment to the Western Australian market.
The last time the city hosted a Princess Cruises homeport was during the 2019/20 season, when the Sun Princess operated from Fremantle. Its return is being seen as a major economic boost, bringing jobs, increased visitor spending, and global attention to the port city.
Matthew Rutherford, the newly appointed Vice President of Asia Pacific at Princess Cruises, expressed his excitement in an interview with The West Australian, stating that they are looking forward to playing an integral role in the growth of the cruise market in Western Australia and supporting local communities. He emphasised the importance of the announcement, stating, “Watch this space” for more developments to come as Princess Cruises continues to expand in the region.
The move aligns with Western Australia’s Cruise Tourism Strategic Plan, which includes a $1 million investment over four years to position the state as a premier cruise destination. Industry voices have long called for more diverse itineraries beyond Sydney and Brisbane, and Fremantle’s inclusion answers that demand.
With its historic port, vibrant community, and stunning coastline, Fremantle looks set to re-establish itself as a key gateway for cruise travellers, opening the door to new opportunities across the state.
