Sri Lanka will introduce a compulsory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for all tourists entering the country from October 15, 2025, according to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
The new directive requires foreign visitors to secure ETA approval online before travelling, ending the practice of completing entry requirements upon arrival. Authorities say the measure is designed to streamline border procedures, enhance efficiency at ports of entry, and bolster security.
Officials have emphasised that the policy reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to aligning with international standards of visitor management. The move also aims to improve the overall travel experience by reducing delays at immigration counters in Colombo and other airports.
Travel industry professionals have been asked to notify clients of the requirement well ahead of planned visits. Tourists are being advised to complete applications early through the official portal, (www.eta.gov.lk), to avoid disruptions or last-minute complications.
Tourism remains one of Sri Lanka’s most important economic sectors, generating crucial foreign exchange and jobs. The government is hopeful that the adoption of a more modern entry system will help strengthen traveller confidence, particularly as arrivals continue to rebound after the pandemic and recent economic setbacks.
