Tata Sons has officially established and registered a public charitable trust in Mumbai, known as ‘The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust’. The trust aims to honour the victims of the tragic Air Indiaflight AI-171accident in Ahmedabad.

The Trust will offer immediate and ongoing support to the families and next-of-kin of those who lost their lives, as well as to those injured, and all others impacted directly or indirectly by the incident. Additionally, it will provide aid to first responders, healthcare, disaster relief professionals, social workers, and government officials who rendered vital support in the aftermath of the accident.

Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have committed a combined donation of Rs 500 crore (each contributing Rs 250 crore) towards the Trust’s charitable objectives. These include a gratuity payment of Rs. 1 crore for the deceased, medical care for those with serious injuries, and assistance in rebuilding the damaged B.J. Medical College Hostel infrastructure affected by the incident.

The Trust will be governed by a five-member Board of Trustees. The initial trustees appointed are S. Padmanabhan, a former Tata executive, and Sidharth Sharma, Tata Sons’ General Counsel. Further trustees will be appointed shortly.

The Trust will begin operations once it completes its registration with the tax authorities and all other requisite formalities.
