Karnataka is making a push to establish a second international airport in Bengaluru, as the existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) approaches its full capacity. With rising passenger demand and limited expansion options at KIA, state authorities are keen to develop additional infrastructure to accommodate future growth.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is currently evaluating three potential sites for the new airport. These sites, shortlisted from an initial list of seven, include Kaggalipura and Harohalli on Kanakpura Road, and Chikkasolur along the Nelamangala–Kunigal road. All three are located between 25 and 45 kilometres from Bengaluru’s city centre. Inspection visits were conducted in April, and the AAI is now awaiting their final report.
In support of the project, Karnataka has submitted a formal proposal to the Union Government, offering around 4,500 acres of land for the construction. The move is seen as crucial to support Bengaluru’s expanding aviation needs and regional connectivity.
However, the proposal faces some debate, with an aviation analyst suggesting that an airport positioned between Bengaluru and Mysuru might be a more logical choice. The analyst argues that such a location would better serve the region’s industrial hubs and improve accessibility for surrounding areas, highlighting the ongoing discussions regarding the most suitable site for the new airport.
