The US Embassy in India issued an advisory on August 18, 2025, via Platform X, reminding visa holders that their authorised period of stay in the is determined by the “Admit Until Date” on the I‑94 form, not by the expiry date on their visa.
The Embassy warned that remaining in the US beyond the authorised date constitutes an “overstay,” which may lead to serious consequences, including visa revocation, deportation, and disqualification from obtaining future visas. Travellers are urged to regularly review their I-94 status at the official US Customs and Border Protection website at i94.cbp.dhs.gov to ensure they remain compliant with US immigration requirements.
The electronic I-94 contains three distinct dates. One is the administrative expiry of the form itself—located at the top right corner—which is purely procedural and does not influence immigration status. Another is the date of the most recent entry into the United States. Most importantly, however, is the “Admit Until Date,” which specifies when one’s permitted immigration status ends. This date is critical for engagements with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services or other government bodies when applying for benefits or extensions.
