Varanasi’s Historic Cremation Ground Gets a Modern Makeover
A major reconstruction effort is underway at Varanasi’s historic Manikarnika Ghat, one of the holiest cremation grounds in the city of Kashi. The ongoing work is part of a broader plan to develop a grand corridor stretching from Manikarnika Ghat to Scindia Ghat, aimed at enhancing the area’s access and facilities for pilgrims.
The focus is on rejuvenating the sacred site through intensified demolition and engineering work using heavy machinery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the project’s foundation stone on July 7, 2023, with development budgeted at around Rs 17.56 crore. The renovated ghat is expected to feature new elements such as VIP seating on the roof, ramps, viewing areas, and improved seating and basic amenities for visitors. A dedicated wood plaza will also be created to assist mourners in procuring wood for cremation rites.
The design has been planned to withstand high flood levels, ensuring the cremation grounds remain functional even during river surges. The renovation extends beyond the ghat itself, heritage sites nearby, including Chakra Pushkarani Kund, Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple, Tarkeshwar Temple and Dattatreya Paduka, will also be restored, and CCTV cameras installed throughout the area for security.
Officials have said the broader goal is to streamlibwtne and widen pathways from Manikarnika to Scindia Ghat, making pilgrimage routes easier to navigate and improving connectivity. However, some local residents and priests have voiced concerns that rapid demolition and modernization may alter the historic character and traditional fabric of the ancient ghats that define Kashi’s spiritual heritage.
