ndiGo, India’s largest and most preferred airline, has announced the appointment of Vikram Singh Mehta as Chairman of the Board of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, effective immediately.
Mehta, a Board Member since May 2022, brings a wealth of experience across public policy, global energy, and corporate governance. His appointment follows the conclusion of Dr. Venkataramani Sumantran’s five-year term, including a pivotal tenure as Chairman since 2022. Dr. Sumantran played a key role in steering IndiGo through the COVID recovery period, enabling the airline to emerge stronger and more resilient.
Mehta began his career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1978, serving for two years before transitioning into the corporate world. He later held prestigious roles such as Chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in India and CEO of Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals in Egypt. He is currently Chairman of the Centre for Social and Economic Progress, a leading public policy think tank, and has served as Executive Chairman of Brookings India.
An accomplished thought leader and corporate strategist, Mehta has held board positions at Colgate Palmolive (India), Mahindra & Mahindra, and Larsen & Toubro. He has been honoured with numerous accolades, including being named “Businessman of the Year” by Asia House (2010) and “Best Independent Director in India” by Asia Centre for Corporate Governance and Sustainability (2016).
Mehta’s academic credentials are equally impressive. A Mathematics graduate from St. Stephen’s College, he holds two postgraduate degrees, one in Politics and Economics from Oxford University and the other in Energy Economics from Tufts University.
IndiGo’s Board and management expressed their confidence in Mehta’s leadership as the airline continues to scale new heights, expand international operations, and reinforce its position as a global aviation leader.
