Visakhapatnam Port is undergoing a major transformation, with new projects worth over Rs 276 crore launched to strengthen its role as a key maritime hub. Supported by India’s growing partnership with BIMSTEC nations, the upgrade was announced during the second BIMSTEC Ports Conclave.
The two-day conclave, themed ‘Navigating the Future: Blue Economy, Innovation & Sustainable Partnerships’, brought together representatives from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and Thailand. The event highlighted India’s Neighbourhood First policy and its commitment to shared regional progress.
Projects worth Rs 160 crore have already been inaugurated. These include a new oil refinery berth, upgraded fire safety systems, covered storage sheds, better internal roads and a stronger customs boundary. Digital upgrades include an RFID gate system, a smart Port Operating System, and a modern Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS).
Additionally, foundation stones were laid for six more initiatives valued over Rs 116 crore. Among them are a new B-ramp, a finger jetty and wharf to support the fishing community, breasting dolphins, and a public promenade near the cruise terminal to encourage tourism.
India also announced a BIMSTEC Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre in Mumbai, which will focus on eco-friendly logistics, skill development, and public-private partnerships.
These efforts reflect a focussed push to build smarter, safer and greener ports ensuring Visakhapatnam plays a central role in the region’s maritime future.
