Qa ntas Airwaysis preparing to rewrite aviation history with the launch of the world’s longest non-stop commercial flight — connecting Sydney to London in a single stretch. Set to begin operations in 2027 under the airline’s ambitious “Project Sunrise,” this route will cover an astonishing 17,800 kilometres in approximately 20 hours.
This groundbreaking flight will be operated using the next-generation Airbus A350-1000, modified specifically to handle ultra-long-haul travel. With just 238 seats, the aircraft has been configured for maximum comfort and spaciousness, with over 40% of the cabin dedicated to First, Business and Premium Economy seats.
First-class suites on board will be nothing short of luxurious — offering a recliner lounge chair, a lie-flat bed, a personal wardrobe, and a 32-inch entertainment screen. Business-class passengers will enjoy privacy, lie-flat seating and improved amenities, while Premium Economy and Economy travellers will benefit from extra legroom, ergonomically designed seating, and state-of-the-art lighting.
What truly sets this flight apart is Qantas’ introduction of a ‘Wellbeing Zone’ — a first in commercial aviation. This space will be open to all passengers and designed to reduce the effects of jet lag on ultra-long-haul journeys. It will feature stretch areas, hydration stations, and guided movement sessions. The airline has worked closely with sleep and nutrition scientists to incorporate features like lighting designed to balance circadian rhythms, meals high in tryptophan to encourage sleep, and in-seat stretching guidance.
To maintain a daily schedule between Australia and Europe, Qantas will use at least three Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. Despite earlier delays caused by regulatory requirements and aircraft design modifications, the airline remains on track to begin flights in 2027.
While the environmental and economic challenges of such a long journey are considerable, Qantas is focusing on fuel efficiency and sustainable aviation fuels to reduce its carbon footprint.
With Project Sunrise, Qantas is not only connecting continents more seamlessly but also leading the charge toward a new era of long-haul comfort and innovation. The skies — and the possibilities — have never looked more exciting.
