Bhutan is leading the way in travel innovation by becoming the first country to introduce a nationwide crypto payment system for tourism. This new initiative lets travellers use Binance Pay for a fully cashless experience — from booking flights and visas to shopping at local markets.
Through collaboration with Binance Pay and Bhutan’s fully digital DK Bank, over 100 merchants across the country now accept crypto payments. Visitors can pay instantly with supported cryptocurrencies for almost every aspect of their trip, including flights, hotel bookings, tours, entrance fees, and purchases in local markets.
This pioneering project combines tradition with technology, empowering local communities and offering a more seamless travel experience. This innovative system allows travellers to use cryptocurrencies for all their travel expenses, from booking flights and securing visas to shopping at local markets and paying for accommodation.
It offers a fully integrated experience across immigration, hotels, guides, and retail outlets, enabling even small vendors in remote villages to accept digital payments through QR codes. Powered by Bhutan’s first fully digital bank, DK Bank, the platform provides lower fees, instant settlements, and supports over 100 different cryptocurrencies, including BNB, BTC, and USDC. Transactions are secured with encryption, two-factor authentication, and real-time confirmation via Binance, ensuring a seamless and reliable experience for visitors and merchants alike.
Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, commented, "We are excited to partner with Bhutan as we are not only advancing the use of cryptocurrencies in travel but also setting a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our belief in a future where digital finance empowers global connectivity and enriches travel experiences."
“This is more than a payment solution — it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience,” said Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Department of Tourism, Bhutan. “It enables a seamless experience for travellers and empowers even small vendors in remote villages to participate in the tourism economy.”
This marks the first time a country’s tourism sector accepts cryptocurrency at a national level, making transactions cheaper and more efficient. DK Bank ensures secure, modern financial services for all, especially marginalised communities.
