Spain has kicked off 2025 with a tourism boom, welcoming a record 17.1 million international visitors in just the first three months of the year. That’s a 5.7 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024, clear evidence that the country’s enduring appeal shows no sign of fading.

This surge in tourism has delivered a strong boost to the Spanish economy. Foreign tourists spent €23.5 billion in the first quarter alone, up 7.2 per cent year on year. With tourism making up a significant part of Spain’s GDP, this rise in visitor spending helps reinforce the country’s position as one of Europe’s strongest-performing economies.

The UK, France, and Germany continue to lead the way in visitor numbers. Spain remains a top pick for European travellers, thanks to its year-round sunshine, vibrant cities, coastal escapes, and rich cultural experiences. Whether it’s beach holidays in the Balearics, food tours in Barcelona, or flamenco nights in Seville, the country offers something for everyone.

Still, this growth hasn’t come without challenges. Some local communities have raised concerns about the impact of mass tourism, including pressure on infrastructure, increasing housing costs, and changes to the character of long-standing neighbourhoods.

In response, the Spanish government is pushing for a more sustainable tourism model. Plans include spreading visitors more evenly across the country, moving focus away from overcrowded hotspots, and encouraging travel during off-peak seasons. The aim is to ensure that the economic benefits of tourism reach more regions and that the sector continues to grow without overwhelming local life.

As Spain rides this wave of record-breaking tourism, its focus is clear: keep the welcome warm, the economy thriving, and communities protected.
