As the summer sun ripens mango orchards across India, Air India has taken on the mission of sharing this seasonal joy with the world. In April 2025 alone, the airline successfully transported nearly 1000 tonnes of fresh Indian mangoes to key destinations across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
From New York’s gourmet grocers to the bustling markets of London and the vibrant food stalls of Tokyo, Indian mangoes are enjoying soaring popularity. Cities like Toronto, Frankfurt, San Francisco, and Sydney have also joined in this global celebration of flavour, driven by Air India’s robust cargo network.
Popular varieties such as Alphonso from Maharashtra and Safeda and Dussehri from Uttar Pradesh are in high demand. Remarkably, over 75 per cent of exported mangoes originate from Western India, making their way to 43 global destinations in 31 countries.
To ensure freshness at 30,000 feet, Air India relies on a highly managed cold chain system. Mangoes are first stored in APEDA-certified temperature-controlled facilities, then carefully transferred via thermal blankets and cool dollies to aircraft cargo holds. This meticulous process ensures the fruit’s flavour, texture, and aroma arrive intact, thousands of kilometres from the grove.
“Perishable movement has seen a significant increase this past year—mangoes being one of the more conspicuous examples,” says Ramesh Mamidala, Head of Cargo, Air India. “We continue to make investments in enhancing our cold-chain infrastructure, streamlining processes at key airports and strengthening our partnerships with exporters to make Air India the preferred choice for fresh cargo.”
“Our teams handle mango shipments with the same precision and care you’d reserve for delicate glassware,” adds Mamidala.
With the mango season in full swing, exporters and freight handlers are ramping up operations, anticipating even greater volumes in the coming weeks.
Through this initiative, Air India not only strengthens India’s agricultural export footprint but also reaffirms its role in delivering a taste of home to Indian diaspora and mango lovers worldwide.
"For us, this mango season is about more than simply transporting fruit. It's about sharing the story of India’s farm-to-globe journey, driven by Air India’s vast network, consistency, and cutting-edge cargo capabilities,” says Mamidala.
