Indian Embassy Issues Urgent Advisory as US–Iran Tensions Rise
India has issued a fresh travel advisory urging its citizens to refrain from travelling to Iran amid a deteriorating security situation linked to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
According to an advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran on January 14, 2026, Indian nationals currently in Iran have been advised to leave the country at the earliest possible time, using all available means, including commercial flights, regardless of the purpose of their stay.
The advisory applies to all Indian citizens, including students, business travellers, pilgrims and tourists. The embassy’s warning follows recent remarks by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who stated that “help is on its way” for Iranian protestors, contributing to heightened concerns over regional stability.
Earlier, on January 5, 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs had cautioned Indian citizens against non-essential travel to Iran. The ministry had also advised Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin residing in the country to remain vigilant and avoid areas affected by protests.
Indian citizens holding resident visas in Iran have been instructed to register with the Indian Embassy in Tehran if they have not already completed the process.
Official estimates indicate that approximately 10,000 Indian nationals currently reside in Iran, including a substantial number of students. Iran also receives thousands of Shia pilgrims from India annually, particularly during significant religious periods.
