Mizoram, renowned for its lush hills, diverse culture, and rich flora and fauna, has been recognised for its commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly tourism. The state’s Tourism Department received the Emerging Eco & Nature Retreat Award at the 10th International Tourism Conclave & Travel Awards (ITCTA) 2025 in New Delhi on July 28. The honour highlights Mizoram’s efforts in promoting responsible tourism while safeguarding its natural environment and encouraging visitation.
The award was accepted by R Lalrodingi, Director of Tourism for Mizoram. This accolade underscores Mizoram’s growing reputation as an eco-tourism hotspot, demonstrating that sustainable travel can also be economically beneficial. It aligns with the state's vision to attract visitors who wish to make a positive impact on the environment and enjoy authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences that benefit local communities.
Promoting Sustainable Travel and Eco-Tourism in Mizoram
Mizoram has pioneered eco-sensitive tourism initiatives, aiming to balance development with conservation. Recently, the Tourism Department has launched several special programmes to boost eco-tourism, attracting travellers who value natural preservation alongside exploration. With its unspoilt landscapes—from pristine hills to riverside towns—the state offers unique opportunities to connect with nature responsibly.
Significant investments have been made in infrastructure to support eco-tourism, including eco-lodges, nature trails, and heritage programmes that allow visitors to enjoy Mizoram’s beauty without harming the environment. Ongoing projects focus on conserving forests and natural habitats, while ensuring the economic benefits of tourism are shared with local communities through job creation and enterprise development.
Growth in Rural Tourism
The Mizoram Tourism Department is actively promoting rural tourism as a means of economic development for remote villages. Initiatives include homestay programmes and cultural experiences that showcase the traditional Mizo way of life. Tourists can stay with local families, participate in farming activities, and enjoy the region’s natural beauty while supporting local economies.
Improved infrastructure, such as better roads, transportation facilities, and information centres, has also been developed. The new Bairabi–Sairang railway line, connecting Aizawl to the national rail network, boosts tourism connectivity across the state and is expected to bring significant benefits to domestic and international visitors.
Focus on Adventure and Eco-Tourism
In response to rising demand for adventure activities, Mizoram has expanded its offerings to include hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife safaris. The scenic hills and forests, home to rare species like the Okinawa Rail and migratory birds, make the state a prime location for eco-adventure tourism.
A notable new event is the Asia Urban Downhill mountain biking race in Aizawl, attracting international biking communities and positioning Mizoram as an adventure tourism hub. The government is also promoting key eco-tourism destinations such as Papum Pare and Mizoram Wildlife Sanctuary, offering opportunities to explore unique flora and fauna in natural surroundings.
Mizoram’s rise as a leading eco-tourism destination is driven by its natural beauty, cultural wealth, and strong environmental ethos. The recent ITCTA award affirms the state’s dedication to responsible and sustainable travel practices. With improved infrastructure, community-based initiatives, and conservation efforts, Mizoram aims to become one of India’s top eco-tourist destinations and a model for eco-tourism globally.
For travellers seeking sustainable and immersive experiences, Mizoram offers a harmonious blend of serene landscapes, rich culture, and eco-conscious travel—set to become a significant contributor to India’s responsible tourism movement.
