Sri Lanka has announced the extension of its visa-free entry scheme to tourists from 40 countries, including India. The move is part of the government’s efforts to boost tourism and support the country's ongoing economic recovery.

The trial phase that was originally launched in March 2023 for seven countries—India, China, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan—the policy has now been widened to include travellers from major regions such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Iran, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. The news was confirmed by Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath during the inauguration of the “Hotel Show Colombo 2025”.

Under the scheme, eligible tourists can visit Sri Lanka without paying the standard visa fee. However, travellers must still complete an online application prior to arrival. The visa permits a single-entry stay of up to 30 days. Those who wish to extend their visit must apply separately and pay the required extension fees.

The Sri Lankan government estimates an annual revenue loss of around USD 66 million due to the removal of visa charges. Despite this, officials are optimistic that the economic benefits from increased tourism will outweigh the lost revenue. More visitors mean higher spending in local hotels, restaurants, and businesses—providing a much-needed boost to the tourism sector, which has struggled in recent years.

By expanding visa-free access to a broader group of nations, Sri Lanka hopes to attract more international tourists and restore confidence in its travel industry. The policy signals a clear intent to position the country as a welcoming and accessible destination in the region.
