During the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Tourism Minister Rohan A Khaunte reaffirmed the state's request to the Centre for extending the visa-on-arrival facility to Goa. He highlighted the increasing global prominence of Goa as a preferred destination and the importance of simplifying international travel procedures.
Minister Khaunte pointed out that while the e-visa scheme has been implemented for over 170 countries, the visa-on-arrival option is currently limited to just four nations—Japan, South Korea, the UAE, and Russia—and is only available at six major airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
“We have raised this matter with the Hon’ble Union Civil Aviation Ministerand are planning to take it up with the Hon’ble Home Ministeras well,” said MinisterKhaunte. “We’ve also corresponded with the Ministry of External Affair, and we are actively pursuing the matter to ensure that Goa is included as avisa-on-arrivalairport. “Goa is now better connected to various parts of the world, and we are seeing the results of our focused outreach efforts,” the Ministeraffirmed.
The Minister stressed that, although the visa-on-arrival facility offers several benefits, it also presents certain limitations. He assured the House that after the session concludes, the issue will be thoroughly discussed with the Chief Minister and all relevant stakeholders. He expressed confidence that through collective dialogue and collaborative effort, a practical solution can be achieved.
In a further boost to Goa's international tourism initiatives, Khaunte announced that the state has successfully tapped into emerging markets such as Poland, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan—regions with previously limited or no direct tourism links with Goa. This expansion is attributed to targeted international roadshows and sustained efforts to promote Goa as a global destination.
Highlighting the importance of data collection, Khaunte revealed that tourist arrival figures and hotel occupancy rates are meticulously tracked via the Tourism Information Management Enterprise (TIME) software. This centralised digital platform facilitates real-time reporting from all registered hotels, guesthouses, and homestays, ensuring accurate data and transparency. This system aids the Department in monitoring tourism trends, enhancing planning, and making informed policy decisions.
The Department of Tourism remains dedicated to improving Goa’s international accessibility, forging new market connections, and providing a seamless, world-class experience for all overseas visitors.
