The US State Department has announced that applications for student visas are now open, inviting international students to study in the United States. Deputy Spokesperson Mignon Houston emphasised that all visa decisions are based on national security, and visas must be used solely for educational purposes.
In her statement to a media outlet, Houston expressed her hope that students will come to the US to learn, rather than cause disruptions or damage campus property. She explained that immigration policies aim to protect both American citizens and international students alike.
Regarding US-India relations, Houston described India as a vital partner in the Indo-Pacific region and mentioned ongoing trade discussions. She underlined the importance of a fair, reciprocal trade relationship in line with the 'America First' policy introduced during the Trump administration.
Houston also defended US tariffs, stating they address unfair trade practices that have harmed American farmers and industries. Negotiations for a Bilateral Trade Agreement between India and the US are underway, with a deadline of July 9 following a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs. Earlier, US President Donald Trump indicated that a trade deal with India was likely soon, with expectations of reduced tariffs. However, India has adopted a firm stance on agricultural issues, and its negotiators have extended their stay in Washington to seek an interim agreement.
