A fresh chapter in regional cooperation is unfolding as Sri Lanka and Odisha work together to deepen ties across tourism, culture, sports, and disaster preparedness. A visiting Sri Lankan delegation in Bhubaneswar highlighted how shared knowledge can lead to stronger communication systems, safer journeys, and new opportunities for economic and cultural exchange.
The historic bond between Odisha and Sri Lanka stretches back centuries, with references in the Mahavamsa linking Sri Lanka’s first ruler, Prince Vijaya, to Kalinga. This deep-rooted connection continues to be celebrated today through cultural ties such as the Bali Jatra festival in Cuttack, where Sri Lankan representatives have participated in recent years.

Disaster management formed a central theme of the discussions. Odisha’s globally recognised expertise in handling cyclones and natural calamities was showcased to the visiting officials, who sought to learn from the state’s approach to saving lives and coordinating relief. Such exchanges promise to improve resilience in both regions, reassuring travellers with safer and more reliable journeys.
Economic aspirations also shaped the dialogue. With Odisha’s economy valued at $110 billion and ambitious plans to expand to 500 billion by 2036, the state is keen to attract investment and strengthen its reputation as a hub for international sports and cultural events. Collaboration with Sri Lanka is expected to open new avenues in these sectors.
The delegation’s visits to iconic sites such as Konark, Dhauli, and Chilika Lake underlined the shared goal of promoting heritage and sustainable tourism. Experts believe this partnership not only enriches visitor experiences in both destinations but also sets an example of how cultural bonds and regional cooperation can shape the future of global tourism.
