Japan is witnessing a tourism boom from India, with May 2025 marking a historic milestone — over 43,000 Indian travellers visited the country in a single month for the first time.

According to official data, this milestone reflects Japan’s increasing popularity among Indian tourists, thanks to its scenic seasonal beauty, rich heritage, and traveller-friendly experiences. May, in particular, is emerging as the perfect travel window for Indians, aligning with summer holidays in India and the end of Japan’s Golden Week. With pleasant weather, fewer domestic tourists, and better availability of hotels and activities, it’s an ideal time to explore Japan.

This surge continues the momentum built in 2024, which saw a record-breaking 233,100 Indian visitors to Japan. From January to May 2025, the country has already welcomed approximately 142,400 Indian travellers — a 39.6 per cent increase over the same period last year.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) Delhi office, along with its local partners, has played a crucial role in promoting Japan as a preferred destination. Their continued efforts are not only increasing footfalls but also deepening cultural and travel ties between the two nations.

To further enhance the travel experience, JNTO has launched an exciting new initiative ahead of EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai — the Digital NFT Art Collection Campaign. Open to all international visitors, the campaign offers travellers a chance to collect region-based digital NFTs linked to key attractions. These digital stamps unlock exclusive content and limited-edition souvenirs, making travel across Japan more interactive and rewarding.

As Indian interest in Japan continues to grow, this blend of technology, culture, and seamless travel is positioning the country as a must-visit destination for experience-led tourism.
